PLA (Polylactic Acid) is a plant-based bioplastic made from renewable natural materials such as corn starch, sugarcane, or cassava. The process starts by fermenting these plants’ natural sugars to produce lactic acid, which is then polymerised into polylactic acid — a plastic-like material that can be moulded into cups, cutlery, packaging, and more. PLA looks and feels like traditional plastic, but it’s industrially compostable, meaning it can break down into natural materials under controlled, high-heat composting conditions.
